My $80/Month AI Tool Stack for Content Creation (Working Parent Reality)
If you’re sitting there at 11:47pm, kids finally asleep, staring at fifty browser tabs of “best AI tools” lists, wondering which ones you actually need – I’ve been exactly where you are.
Five weeks ago, that was me. Overwhelmed. Confused. Worried I’d spend money on the wrong tools. Terrified I’d waste my precious 90-minute work window setting up something that wouldn’t even work.
Today? I have a system. Five AI tools that cost me $80/month (with smart annual billing) that turn what used to take 40 hours into a 3-hour workflow.
And the best part? I tested the expensive mistakes so you don’t have to.
The Moment Everything Changed
Week 1 of this journey. It’s 11:47pm on a Tuesday. My 5-year-old son is asleep. My 1-year-old daughter finally stopped crying around 11:15pm. My wife needs the evening for herself after a long day with both kids.
I have maybe 90 minutes. Maybe.
And I’m stuck.
ChatGPT? Claude? Gemini? Which one for scripts?
Descript? DaVinci? CapCut? Which one for editing?
Midjourney? DALL-E? Runway? Which one for B-roll?
Every YouTube video I watch says something different. “You NEED this tool!” “This is the ONLY tool that matters!” “I tried 47 tools and THIS one changed everything!”
Cool. But I don’t have time to try 47 tools. I have 90 minutes total. A wife who deserves the evening. Two kids who need their dad present. And a full-time IT job that starts at 8am tomorrow.
That’s when I realized: I’m not alone in this. Every working parent trying to build something online faces this exact moment. The overwhelm. The paralysis. The fear of choosing wrong.
So I made a decision. I’d test methodically. Document everything. Share the results.
Not because I’m some expert. Because I just figured this out five weeks ago and I remember exactly how confusing it was.
What This Article Covers (And Why It Matters)
By the time you finish this, you’ll know:
The Five Tools I Use: What each does, why I chose it, what it costs, and which ones I’d cut if budget forced me.
The Annual Savings Strategy: How paying annually for Descript and Midjourney saves me $168/year – and over my 5-year journey, that’s $840 I can reinvest.
Why Both Claude AND ChatGPT: This confused me for weeks. Everyone says “pick one.” I use both. Here’s why that actually makes sense.
The Carrier Promotion Secret: How I got Perplexity Pro completely free (and how you might too).
The Midjourney vs Runway Decision: I spent two weeks testing Runway. Then I stopped. The math didn’t work. Here’s the breakdown.
The 3-Step Getting Started Plan: Because trying to implement all 5 tools at once is how you overwhelm yourself and quit.
But more importantly, you’ll see this through the lens of a working parent building something real. Not a full-time creator with unlimited time. Not someone with a massive budget. A regular dad with 90-minute work windows and a tight budget who’s figuring this out one week at a time.
Tool #1: Claude AI Pro – $20/Month (The Scripting Brain)
What it does: This is my primary AI for script writing. Every video you’re watching started as a conversation with Claude.
Why Claude specifically: I tested ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini for scripting. Here’s what I found: Claude keeps my conversational “neighbor over coffee” voice better. ChatGPT is more polished and formal. For my brand – authentic working parent sharing the journey – Claude wins.
The cost-benefit: A professional scriptwriter charges $800-$1,500 per script with a week turnaround. I create 4 scripts per month. That would be $3,200/month minimum. Claude Pro? $20/month. And I get the script in 3 minutes, not 7 days.
Usage limits: Claude Pro has message limits (around 45 messages per 5 hours). For my weekly workflow, this has never been an issue. Monday mornings, I generate my script in maybe 10 messages total. Well within limits.
Would I cut it: Never. This is the foundation. If I had to choose one AI tool, this would be it.
The context window advantage: Claude handles up to 200,000 tokens. That means I can feed it my entire brand voice guide, previous scripts, and audience research all at once. It maintains consistency across 260 weeks of content. That’s powerful for long-term projects like mine.
Tool #2: ChatGPT Plus – $20/Month (The B-Roll Master)
What it does: ChatGPT is my B-roll generation tool. I use it for creating technical screenshots, UI mockups, and anything needing readable text.
Why I have both Claude AND ChatGPT: This confused me for the longest time. Everyone says “just pick one and stick with it.” But here’s what I learned after 5 weeks:
They’re good at different things.
Claude excels at maintaining my conversational voice across long-form scripts. It’s better at nuanced storytelling and emotional beats.
ChatGPT excels at generating images where text needs to be perfectly readable. Dashboards, error messages, code snippets, pricing comparisons – anything where “close enough” isn’t good enough.
The B-roll workflow: When I need 15-20 B-roll images for a video, about 70% come from ChatGPT (technical content), 30% come from Midjourney (emotional atmosphere). I’ll dive deeper into this in future videos, but the combination gives me both technical credibility AND emotional connection.
Would I cut it: Maybe. If budget absolutely forced me, I’d keep Claude and drop ChatGPT. But having both is worth $20/month for me because it saves me hours of back-and-forth trying to get readable text from Midjourney.
The multimodal advantage: ChatGPT can analyze images, generate images, search the web in real-time. That versatility matters when I need quick research or visual analysis.
Tool #3: Perplexity Pro – $0/Month (The Lucky Break)
What it does: Real-time research with sources. Whenever I need current pricing, competitor analysis, or keyword research – Perplexity.
How I got it free: Full transparency – I got lucky. When I signed up for my Bell mobile plan in Canada, it happened to include 1-year free Perplexity Pro. I didn’t negotiate it. I didn’t call and ask. It just came with the plan.
Your carrier might too: Before you pay $20/month for Perplexity, check your carrier’s current promotions. As of November 2025, Bell, Rogers, and Telus in Canada all offer 1-year free Perplexity Pro with eligible mobile plans. In the US, I haven’t found similar deals with T-Mobile, Verizon, or AT&T – but it’s worth 5 minutes to check.
Why it matters: The difference between Googling and using Perplexity is significant. Google gives you 847,000 results to sort through. Perplexity gives you synthesized answers with sources, related questions, and context – all in one interface.
Recent example: I needed to know “What are working parents searching for about passive income?” Google buried me in SEO spam. Perplexity gave me top search queries, volume data, and 3 Reddit threads where real parents discussed this exact problem. Saved me 45 minutes.
Would I pay $20/month: Probably yes. Research quality directly impacts content quality. But definitely check your phone plan first.
Tool #4: Descript – $16/Month (Annual Billing)
What it does: Video editing through text editing. Record video, upload to Descript, it transcribes everything automatically. Then I edit the text, and the video edits itself.
Why text-based editing matters for parents: Traditional timeline editing requires sustained focus. If my daughter wakes up mid-edit, I lose my place. I forget what I was doing. I waste 10 minutes remembering.
With Descript, I’m editing text. It’s like editing a Google Doc. If I get interrupted, I can resume immediately. I know exactly where I was because it’s just… text.
The annual savings decision: Descript monthly is $24/month. Annual is $192/year – which averages to $16/month. That’s $96 saved per year.
Is $96 significant? For my $5,000 total budget over 5 years, yes. Every dollar matters when you’re building on constraints.
Would I cut it: Never. Or until I quit making videos. This is my core editing tool. The time savings alone justify the cost.
The working parent advantage: Text-based editing means I can edit in 15-minute chunks. Morning before kids wake up, lunch break at work, evening after bedtime. Traditional editing requires longer focused sessions I simply don’t have.
Tool #5: Midjourney – $24/Month (Annual Billing)
What it does: AI-generated images for B-roll. Moody workspace shots, Vietnamese street scenes for my location independence dream, symbolic objects like coffee cups and clocks.
The Runway testing story: Early on, I thought I needed Runway Gen-4 for video B-roll. Everyone on YouTube was talking about it. “AI video is the future!” “$15/month for video generation!”
So I tested it for two weeks. Created maybe 7 video clips total.
Why so few? Runway Gen-4 costs 70 credits per 5-second video clip. Standard plan gives you 650 credits per month. Do the math: 650 ÷ 70 = 9 videos maximum.
At $15/month for 9 videos, that’s $1.67 per clip.
Then I compared to Midjourney. $24/month annual ($30 monthly) for unlimited image generation in relaxed mode. I can create 20-30 images per video, add motion in Descript, and the result looks more cinematic than Runway’s output anyway.
The quality difference: Runway produces 5-second clips that look AI-generated. Midjourney produces photorealistic images that, when animated with subtle motion in Descript, look like documentary footage.
YouTube compresses everything anyway. The “4K video” advantage of Runway disappears after upload.
Would I cut it: Never. Visual B-roll is essential for retention. And Midjourney gives me better results at better value than any alternative I’ve tested.
The annual savings: Midjourney monthly is $30. Annual is $288 ($24/month average). That’s $72 saved per year. Combined with Descript’s $96 annual savings, I’m saving $168/year just by paying annually. Over 5 years, that’s $840 saved.
The Complete Stack: $80/Month (Or $94 If You Pay Monthly)
Let me break down the real math:
If you pay everything monthly:
Claude Pro: $20
ChatGPT Plus: $20
Perplexity Pro: $0 (with carrier promo, otherwise $20)
Descript: $24
Midjourney: $30
Total: $94/month
If you pay Descript and Midjourney annually (my approach):
Claude Pro: $20
ChatGPT Plus: $20
Perplexity Pro: $0
Descript: $16 (annual average)
Midjourney: $24 (annual average)
Total: $80/month averaged
Annual savings: $168/year 5-year savings: $840
For a project with a $5,000 total budget, $840 matters. That’s 16.8% of my entire budget saved just by clicking “annual billing” instead of “monthly.”
What I Didn’t Show You (And Why)
I didn’t show you how to set up each tool step-by-step. That’s not helpful in a video or article. You’d get confused, I’d rush it, and nobody wins.
I didn’t show you my complete prompt libraries for Claude, ChatGPT, and Midjourney. Because I’m sharing those across multiple future videos. The B-roll system is coming soon. Claude scripting techniques after that.
I didn’t explain why I chose Midjourney over Runway in exhaustive detail. The short version: Better quality for my needs, better value, works better with my workflow.
What I DID show you: Which 5 tools I use. Why I chose them. What they cost. How they fit together at a high level. What I tested and stopped using.
That’s more valuable than rushed tutorials. Now you can research these tools knowing they work together. You can budget appropriately. You can decide which ones matter most for YOUR situation.
And you know I tested Runway and made a different choice – that saves you testing time and money.
What You Can Do Right Now
Don’t try to implement all 5 tools at once. That’s how you overwhelm yourself. That’s how you quit in Week 2.
Here’s what I recommend:
Step 1: Pick ONE AI tool to test.
My recommendation: Start with Claude Pro ($20/month) OR use ChatGPT’s free tier to test. Create 4 pieces of content with it over 2 weeks. See if it actually saves you time.
If you’re primarily writing scripts or long-form content, Claude is the better choice. If you need image generation and web search built-in, ChatGPT might win.
Step 2: Check your phone carrier promotions.
Before paying $20/month for Perplexity Pro, spend 5 minutes checking. Bell, Rogers, and Telus in Canada offer 1-year free as of November 2025. You might get lucky like I did.
Worst case, you budget $20/month for it. Best case, you save $240/year.
Step 3: Add ONE more tool.
After you’ve tested your first AI for 2 weeks and it’s proven valuable, add one more. My recommendation: Descript for editing if you’re creating video content.
The text-based editing is a game-changer for busy parents. Pay annually to save $96/year.
Then, after Descript is working smoothly, consider adding Midjourney for B-roll. Again, pay annually for the $72/year savings.
Don’t rush this. I added tools over 5 weeks, not 5 days. Each one had to prove its value before I committed the next $20-30/month.
The Real Problem (And What Comes Next)
These 5 tools solve content CREATION. I can now create a video in 2-3 hours instead of 40.
But here’s what I discovered:
Creating content takes 2-3 hours. Distributing that content manually takes over 30 hours.
Let me break that down:
Manual distribution (the problem):
Creating 5-10 shorts manually from one long video: 20+ hours of cutting, editing, exporting
Writing metadata for each piece (titles, descriptions, tags, captions): 4-8 hours staring at blank screens
Posting everything to Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube Community, LinkedIn: Another 4 hours
Total: 30+ hours just to distribute one piece of content.
That math doesn’t work. Not with a full-time job. Not with two kids. Not if I want any time with my family.
So I built something different. Four automation tools that took distribution from 30+ hours to zero.
And that’s what I’m revealing next time.
For Working Parents Building Something Real
If you’re reading this, you’re probably not a full-time creator with unlimited time and budget.
You’re probably like me. Working full-time. Raising kids. Trying to build something that gives your family more freedom.
You don’t need 47 tools. You need 5 tools that work. You don’t need perfection. You need systems that respect your constraints.
This is Week 5 of my 260-week journey. The mission: $5,000 invested over 5 years to build $2,000/month passive income so my family can move to Vietnam where our money goes 3-4 times further.
Or Thailand. Or Portugal. Or anywhere that gives YOUR family more freedom.
I’m building in public. Documenting everything. Sharing the wins and the expensive mistakes.
Because if a working IT dad with two young kids can figure this out in 90-minute windows at 11:47pm, you can too.
Next time: The 4 automation tools that saved 30+ hours. The system that runs while I’m at work. The setup that posts to 5 platforms automatically.
See you there.

Hook:
At 11:47pm last Tuesday, I was stuck.
My son asleep. My daughter finally quiet. My wife needing the evening to herself.
I had 90 minutes. Maybe.
And I was staring at 50 browser tabs of “best AI tools” lists, completely paralyzed.
ChatGPT or Claude? Descript or DaVinci? Midjourney or Runway?
Every creator says something different. Every list contradicts the last one.
The Overwhelm:
You know that feeling?
When you’re not a full-time creator with unlimited time.
When you’re a working parent with a full-time job, two kids, and maybe 5 hours a week to build something.
When every dollar matters because your budget is tight and your family comes first.
That’s where I was 5 weeks ago.
The Breakthrough:
So I did something different.
I tested methodically. One tool at a time. Documented everything. Tracked the real costs AND the time savings.
And now? I have a system.
Five AI tools. $80/month (paying annually for the smart savings). Turns 40-hour workflows into 3-hour workflows.
Here’s the stack:
🧠 Claude Pro ($20/month) – Scripting brain 🎨 ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) – B-roll master 🔍 Perplexity Pro ($0/month) – Got lucky with Bell promo 🎬 Descript ($16/month annual) – Text-based editing 🖼️ Midjourney ($24/month annual) – B-roll generation
Total: $80/month averaged (or $94 if you pay monthly)
What makes this different:
I use BOTH Claude and ChatGPT. Everyone says “pick one.” But they’re good at different things. Claude keeps my conversational voice for scripts. ChatGPT creates readable technical B-roll.
I tested Runway Gen-4 for two weeks. Then stopped. The math didn’t work. Midjourney gives me better results at better value.
I pay annually for Descript and Midjourney. Saves $168/year. Over my 5-year journey, that’s $840 saved. When your total budget is $5,000, that matters.
The honest truth:
This took me 5 weeks to figure out. I spent money on tools I don’t use anymore. I tested things that didn’t work.
But now I have clarity. And I’m sharing everything because I remember exactly how confusing this was.
What I cover in the full video:
✓ Why both Claude AND ChatGPT (not just one) ✓ How to get Perplexity free with Bell, Rogers, or Telus ✓ The Runway vs Midjourney decision (with math) ✓ Annual billing strategy (save $168/year) ✓ The 3-step plan to start with ONE tool and scale
But here’s the real secret:
These 5 tools solve content CREATION (2-3 hours).
But distribution? That was taking me 30+ hours manually.
Creating shorts, writing metadata, posting to 5 platforms – it was crushing me.
So I built something else. Four automation tools that took distribution from 30+ hours to ZERO.
And I’m revealing that in the next video.
For working parents building something real:
If you’re trying to create content around a full-time job and family responsibilities…
If you’re tired of “best tools” lists that assume unlimited time and budget…
If you just want someone to tell you what actually works…
This is for you.
